Paliyam Plate : Buddhism in KERALA


            Paliyam plate of Vikramadithya Varaguna (AD 882-921) of evrest while the Ay Kingdom of Vizhinjam, is another historical documents regarding the existence of Sreemoolavasam Buddha Vihara. The king had granted some extensive landed property to the temple in the Paliyam plate. At the time of the Moozhika king Vallbha, the Vihara at Sreemoolavasa was on the verge of ruin due to sea erosion. Valabha is said to have marched towards south to join the army of the king of Kerala who was attacked by the Chola king. On the way Vallabha visited Sreemoolavasam and offered some support to protect the Vihara. According to Dr. T. A. Gopinatha Rao, the Vihara at Sreemoolavasam perished in or around the first quarter of 11th century.
