Places like Maruthurkulangara, Kunnathur, Neelamperoor and Sreemoolavasam are marked by their rich Buddhist heritage. Pallikkunnu near Valappattanam in northern Kerala was also an important ancient Buddhist pilgrimage centre. In his travelogue the noted traveler of 10th century AD, Alburuni mentions the Buddha Vihara of Pallikkunnu. He also has says that the people of Pallikkunnu were Shramanakas (Buddhists).
